Trowers & Hamlins is considering making a number of redundancies following the Government's recent announcement on public sector spending cuts. Trowers confirmed that it is currently reviewing three or four associate roles in its public sector practice across the UK, but that it had not yet reached a final decision. The firm cited the Government's plans to cut public sector spending as the principal reason for the potential layoffs.

Linklaters and SJ Berwin have taken lead roles on the £340m development and pre-let of the new UBS headquarters on the Broadgate Estate in London. Bluebutton Properties, a joint venture company owned by British Land and Blackstone, has secured a 700,000 sq ft pre-let with UBS at the estate. The new building, when completed, will be the largest office block in the City.

Hammonds has continued its recent real estate hiring spree with the appointment of four senior lawyers including former Halliwells partner Mark Gaffney. Gaffney has joined the UK top 25 firm as a partner in Manchester as one of four new hires to Hammonds' built environment group, which covers property, planning and construction. Gaffney joined from Halliwells' Liverpool office, following the sell-off of the now defunct firm. Prior to Halliwells, he led Mace & Jones' Liverpool property practice.

Debowski will be joined at Salans by partners Piotr Szafarz and Maciej Ryniewicz as well as counsel Tomasz Stasiak. The date of their moves are as yet unconfirmed. The departures will see CC's Warsaw partner headcount reduced by one third. The firm has appointed Daniel Kopania as its new head of real estate in Warsaw, effective immediately.

Reed Smith has boosted its energy practice with the hire of four partners from Pinsent Masons. Construction partners Keith Hartley, Peter Cassidy, Vincent Rowan and Gordon Bell will increase partner headcount in the US firm's energy, trade & commodities group to 13. Hartley and Cassidy have already joined Reed Smith, but Rowan and Bell will remain at Pinsents while they serve their notice period, before joining the firm later this year after fulfilling existing commitments under the firm's partnership agreement.
