Debevoise boosts London office with senior Clifford Chance insurance partner

Debevoise & Plimpton has strengthened its London office with the hire of insurance partner Clare Swirski from Clifford Chance (CC).

Swirski, who had been a partner at the magic circle firm since 2003, joins Debevoise as a consultant.

She is well regarded in corporate insurance circles, and has years of experience in advising insurers and other financial institutions on the full range of corporate matters, including share and business acquisitions, joint ventures, reinsurance, longevity transactions, distribution agreements and group reorganisations.

Her hire is the third for Debevoise’s London operation this year. It brought in private equity funds specialist Simon Witney from King & Wood Mallesons in January as a consultant, and Boise Schiller’s global head of arbitration Wendy Miles QC as a partner in February.

The US firm saw its revenue dip during the last financial year, following three years of growth, with gross revenue falling by 2.9% in 2016 to $735m (£590m).

Presiding partner Michael Blair, who assumed leadership of the New York-based firm in 2011, attributed the declines to a moderate pullback in the US transactional market last year, following a record-setting year in 2015.

Other recent partner departures from CC include Amsterdam energy head David Griston, who is joining Dentons, and former German private equity head Christopher Kellett, who retired from the firm in April this year before sealing a move to magic circle rival Linklaters.
