    Online special: Continued market turmoil takes its toll on top firms' confidence

    Law firms are scaling back growth predictions in the face of continued market turmoil, according to Legal Week research, with international firms increasingly backing the Middle East and Asia to drive their current expansion. Legal Week's quarterly business confidence poll shows the lowest level of partners predicting double-digit growth over the next 12 months since the poll began in 2001. Eleven percent of respondents expected turnover to grow by more than 10% over the coming year, against 30% in the last poll in January and a high last year of 70%.

    Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP), Herbert Smith and Ashurst have seen their market reputation improve more in the last three years than any other 'chasing pack' firm, according to new Legal Week research. The latest Legal Week/EJ Legal Big Question survey of leading City lawyers asked them to rank which two firms had made the most progress improving their market positions over the last three years, with respondents ranking BLP as the firm which has made the most progress.

    Almost a third of leading lawyers think the UK Government's tax policies have damaged the City's position as a global financial centre, with almost 70% objecting to recent proposals to impose a charge on non-domiciled individuals.Legal Week research found that 20% of City lawyers think the Labour Government's tax policies have had a negative impact on the City's position, while a further 11% go further and argue the policies have actively driven business away.

    More than half of the UK's leading lawyers believe the Bar's independence is under threat from sweeping reforms contained in the Legal Services Act (LSA), according to new research. The finding is part of the latest Legal Week/EJ Legal Big Question survey, which polled senior solicitors on their views on the future of the Bar in the wake of fundamental reform to the UK's regulatory framework for legal services.Fifty-eight percent of responding partners said that the LSA was a threat to the future of the Bar, including 12% who thought the Act was a threat to the extent that 'the writing is on the wall' for the Bar's future.

    Only a small percentage of UK lawyers are strongly opposed to taking on ethically-questionable mandates, a survey of the profession has found, even though the majority believe doing so can damage a law firm's reputation. Just 11% of leading UK lawyers said ethics should be a major consideration in accepting new clients in the latest Legal Week/EJ Legal Big Question survey. The majority (66.5%) said law firms should consider instructions from controversial regimes or corporate clients on a case-by-case basis.

    Business confidence among the UK's top lawyers has dropped from sky-high levels to its lowest rate in almost five years in the clearest indication yet that City partners expect shifts in the global economy to hit the legal sector. The quarterly Legal Week/EJ Legal business confidence poll shows 30% of partners are expecting double-digit revenue growth over the next 12 months, down from last year's high of 70% and significantly down from 66% last quarter.
