  • Deal lawyers cheered as debt markets kick back into life

    As corporate activity begins its long-awaited recovery in the aftermath of the financial crisis, life certainly promises to be eventful for debt capital markets (DCM) lawyers - which is a considerable improvement on last year. The consensus from deal lawyers is that the debt market is also showing signs of life. New data from Thomson Reuters highlights a healthy revival in DCM activity around the globe, with the first quarter of the year seeing a 37% rise in activity on the last three months of 2009. While Q1 global DCM activity was still down by 10% on the equivalent period last year, the market is no longer entirely driven by companies seeking funding because they have no alternative.

  • Magic circle duo take top roles on biggest London IPO for three years

    Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Linklaters have won roles on the largest London listing in nearly three years, reports The Am Law Daily. Essar Energy, a subsidiary of Indian conglomerate Essar Group, has set a price range for its planned $2.5bn (£1.6bn) initial public offering (IPO) on the London Stock Exchange.

  • Ashurst boosts Asia practices with London partner relocations

    Ashurst is relocating London partners Stuart Rubin and Philip Thomson to Hong Kong and Singapore respectively as the firm moves to bulk up its presence in the Asia region. Ashurst counsel Rubin transferred from the UK top 20 law firm's London capital markets practice to Hong Kong in April. It is understood he will be made up to partner in the firm's 2010 promotions round, which will take effect on 1 May.

  • A&O bulks up in Germany with hire of Lovells and Dewey partners

    Allen & Overy (A&O) has moved to significantly bolster its German practice with the hire of three partners from Lovells and Dewey & LeBoeuf. Frankfurt-based litigator Daniel Busse is set to leave Lovells along with two associates to take up a role as head of A&O's German dispute resolution practice, having been a partner at Lovells since 2004.

    Nabarro's corporate team has closed £1bn worth of emerging market listings within a week, rounding off a successful first quarter for the firm. In late March, the UK top 25 firm advised Arden Partners as financial adviser to Indian power supplier KSK on its move from the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) to a secondary listing on the Official list with a market capitalisation of £800m.
