Baker McKenzie secured the CSR, Diversity, Transformation and Economic Empowerment Award for its work helping ensure the rule of law is upheld during the Kenyan elections. A team of lawyers including Johannesburg-based partner Darryl Bernstein, associate Rebecca Browning and trainee Nina Braude, teamed up with the Public International Law & Policy Group (PILPG) to hold training with community organisations and lawyers in Kisumu and Mombasa.
PILPG is a global pro bono law firm providing free legal assistance to states and governments involved in peace negotiations, drafting post-conflict constitutions, and prosecuting war criminals. It also provides policy formulation advice and training on matters related to conflict resolution.
The Bakers team helped provide legal training for NGOs, Kenyan police, community leaders, traditional leaders, paralegals, lawyers and prosecutors, specifically in relation to the documentation of human rights violations, the use of strategic litigation to achieve social justice. and the interviewing of witnesses.
One judge described the initiative as “outstanding” and praised the team for its “cutting-edge work”.
