LOD launches in Munich for tenth office worldwide

LOD has launched in Germany with the establishment of a base in Munich, its 10th office globally.

The Munich office, which opened this week, will be managed by Michael Zollner, who joins LOD from legal support business Renner Zollner where he was a partner. He previously worked as a partner at Pinsent Masons and CMS in Germany.

He will be joined by Carl Renner, the founder of Renner Zollner, who was previously a senior associate with DLA Piper in Munich. Renner will operate as a director of the new office.

So far, Zollner and Renner have already signed up two other lawyers.

LOD chief executive Tom Hartley told Legal Week: “Germany has an emerging body of lawyers who want to work differently and we felt that the size of the market and quality of the customer base meant we could build something as successful as we have in our other geographies. We entered Australia through our AdventBalance merger, and that has been successful in creating client relations across more than one region. We felt that this opening would allow us to do the same thing.”

As well as Munich, the flexible legal services company also has bases in London, New York, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Sydney, Dubai and Singapore.

Zollner added: “With the solid success of LOD across its nine other offices, German companies can already see how LOD have made a significant difference to the flexibility and performance of their legal teams. We are in an unrivalled position to come to the market with a number of existing strong relationships with German clients based around the world.”

Last year, LOD launched LOD Dubai, establishing the first flexible legal service in the Middle East. Hartley said the Dubai office has recruited about eight lawyers since opening.

The firm’s latest financial results saw UK profits rise from £15,000 to £2m owing to “exceptional costs” incurred in 2016-16, according to co-founder Simon Harper.
