Paul Weiss makes first ever London partner promotion in five-strong round

Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison has made its first ever partner promotion in London, on the back of its first lateral hire in the City earlier this year.

Counsel Ramy Wahbeh has been made up to partner in the US firm’s corporate department. He specialises in cross-border M&A, strategic joint ventures and private equity, and relocated to the firm’s London office from New York in 2013.

With Wahbeh’s appointment, Paul Weiss will have four partners in London.

Earlier this year, the firm made its first ever London lateral partner hire when corporate partner Alvaro Membrillera joined from US rival Simpson Thacher & Bartlett. At the time, Paul Weiss chair Brad Karp told Legal Week that the firm had been “looking for someone spectacular – someone who ‘walked on water’”.

Paul Weiss launched in London in 2001 with the relocation of US corporate duo Mark Bergman and David Lakhdhir. Until Membrillera’s hire, the pair were the only partners in the London office.

Wahbeh’s promotion is one of five in this year’s round, with the other four new partners based in New York. All the appointments come into effect January 2018.

Last year the firm made up three partners, all of who were based in New York.

Paul Weiss stunned the Wall Street world last year by bringing on Cravath Swaine & Moore partner Scott Barshay in New York. That move brought Paul Weiss several new clients, and was followed by the hire of long-serving Ropes & Gray intellectual property litigation partner Steven Baughman in Washington DC.
