(L-R) Awards host Peter Ndoro; Paulo Pimenta, Miranda & Associados; awards judge Jonathan Maphosa, South African Bankers Services Company

Finalists: Africa Legal Network (ALN); DLA Piper Africa (Highly Commended); VDA Legal Partners; Webber Wentzel/Linklaters.

Portuguese law firm Miranda & Associados’s Miranda Alliance lifted the African Network of the Year award for the further development of its Francophone group to complement its well-established Lusophone practice, expanding its expertise with energy projects and the oil and gas sector on the continent.

During the past 12 months, Miranda has broadened its reach into the Ivory Coast, meaning it now has coverage in five French-speaking sub-Saharan countries and an additional liaison office in Paris, allowing it to bring its local practices closer to its oil, gas and natural resources clients and referral firms in Europe (most of which have African networks that only extend to northwest Africa).

With a total of 26 offices around the world – 18 of which are located in sub-Saharan Africa – Miranda Alliance claims the largest African network of any global law firm, trusted by its clients to maintain international standards in some of the world’s most challenging jurisdictions. The network also encourages extended secondment periods between members to help better understand working and legal practices across the different regions in which it operates.

“Impressive global reach, vast expertise, clear evidence of client care, strategic vision and commitment to CSR,” commented a judge.
