Sainsbury's names 11 firms to panel with BLM and Lewis Silkin among new additions

Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s has completed its UK legal panel, appointing 11 firms to the line-up.

Addleshaw Goddard, CMS, Linklaters, Shepherd and Wedderburn, TLT and Winckworth Sherwood have all been reappointed to the roster, with BLM, Lewis Silkin, Mason Hayes & Curran, and Cleaver Fulton Rankin new additions to the list.

Former panel firms Bond Dickinson, Croner and Gowling WLG  are no longer on the panel, however it is unclear whether or not they tendered. KWM’s European business also used to sit on the panel before the firm collapsed into administration earlier this year. DWF was also previously listed as a panel firm to the retailer.

The review is the first for Sainsbury’s since it acquired Argos-owner Home Retail Group last year and the panel will cover work for both retailers.

Head of group legal services for Sainsbury’s Nick Grant said: “As we continue to integrate Argos with Sainsbury’s, we’ve selected a panel that provides the right combination of experience and fresh thinking.”

The panel covers England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, as well as the Republic of Ireland, which is a new addition following the acquisition of Home Retail Group.

When Sainsbury’s kicked off the review earlier this year, a partner at one of the then panel firms said: “Sainsbury’s in itself is huge – just doing Sainsbury’s is a big attention-getter, but it’s an even bigger prize if it’s Argos as well.”

The retailer completed its acquisition of Home Retail Group – which owns Argos and Habitat – in September, a deal that saw Clifford Chance advise Sainsbury’s and Linklaters advise Home Retail Group.

The review does not include Sainsbury’s’ banking activities.
