Finalists: Baker & McKenzie, Charles Russell Speechlys, Clifford Chance, Gowling WLG, Hogan Lovells (highly commended), Holman Fenwick Willan, Mayer Brown, Slaughter and May

The award in this category was handed to Clifford Chance (CC), which represented Citigroup on the bank’s successful defence against Terra Firma’s lawsuit.

The British private equity group’s owner – City financier Guy Hands – dramatically withdrew the long-running lawsuit in June, after initially claiming that Citi misled him into overpaying for music label EMI in 2007.

One of the judges said that what stood out on this case was the “emphatic nature of victory”.

The magic circle firm’s team was led by London litigation partners Roger Best, Roger Leese and Maxine Mossman. The firm instructed Brick Court Chambers’ Mark Howard QC and Fred Hobson.

To save costs, the team used a third-party provider, Integreon, to assist with the document review process.

CC also collaborated with US firm Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison, which had represented Citi when part of the case was previously tried by a New York jury.
