Microsoft, Latham and Cooley among winners at Transatlantic Legal Awards

Sullivan & Cromwell, Latham & Watkins, Garrigues and Cooley’s Joe Conroy were among the big winners at last night’s Transatlantic Legal Awards.

The awards, jointly hosted by Legal Week and The American Lawyer, saw firms from continental Europe, the UK and the US gather at Fishmonger’s Hall for a gala dinner to celebrate excellence in handling transatlantic matters across key practice groups, as well as areas such as innovation and pro bono.

Cooley chief executive Joe Conroy was one of the big individual winners of the night, seeing off competition from Norton Rose Fulbright’s Peter Martyr and Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan’s John Quinn to secure Transatlantic Law Firm Leader of the Year.

His win comes after the west coast firm launched in London in January 2015 with an initial team of 20 partners. It now houses some 25 partners and more than 70 fee earners, with Conroy telling Legal Week in October that he predicted lawyer headcount in the office will hit triple digits. The firm was named London Office of the Year at Legal Week‘s British Legal Awards.

Latham meanwhile, beat Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom to secure Transatlantic Law Firm of the Year (US), with Taylor Wessing taking the European equivalent award ahead of Slaughter and May.

Other big winners on the night include Sullivan & Cromwell, which picked up five awards, and Skadden, which picked up four awards. DLA Piper won Pro Bono Initiative of the Year for a project that saw the firm establish legal clinics in the UK, US and across Europe to help refugees displaced by war, conflicts and persecution. To date, 180 lawyers from 18 offices have devoted more than 7,000 hours to provide legal assistance to 175 people and ten non-governmental organisations.

Microsoft picked up two significant in-house awards, with chief legal officer Brad Smith winning Transatlantic In-house Leader and the company winning Transatlantic In-House Team of the Year.
