White & Case launches in Madrid with hire of Latham team

White & Case has launched an office in Madrid – the US firm’s first office in Spain – with the hire of Latham & Watkins’ corporate head in the country, Juan Manuel De Remedios.

De Remedios, an M&A and capital markets specialist who is dual-qualified in Spain and New York, joins the office as executive partner.

While at Latham, he led on some of the most high-profile transactions in Spain in recent years, including advising Azbil Corporation, a Japanese listed company, on the acquisition of a 80% stake in Telstar, as well as taking a role for Deutsche Banks and Nomura on the €913m (£784m) capital increase through a rights issue of Banco Sabadell.

He is followed by Latham counsel Yoko Takagi, who joins White & Case as a partner, and a team of associates. The office will focus on M&A, debt and equity capital markets, finance and restructuring matters.

The hire leaves Latham’s Madrid offering with four partners, with Ignacio Pallares taking over from Remedios as chair of the corporate department of the Spanish offices.

“This move fulfils our long-held ambition to have an office in Spain,” said White & Case chairman Hugh Verrier. “The office will support the needs of our clients investing in Spain as well as Spanish clients expanding globally.”

“Juan Manuel ticks two boxes in one: he is both a strong M&A and capital markets practitioner,” added London executive partner Oliver Brettle. “Spain was an obvious gap and had been so for a long time. We had been looking for the last five years or so, because we wanted to wait for someone of Juan Manuel’s quality and international practice reach.”

The move follows White & Case’s hire of a four-partner capital markets team from Linklaters in Paris three weeks ago, and last month’s rehire of M&A partner Daniel Dufner in New York, also from Linklaters.
