Siemens cuts UK panel to just three firms as OC, Eversheds win roles

Siemens has cut its UK legal panel to just three firms, with previous adviser Reed Smith reappointed alongside new roles for Eversheds and Osborne Clarke (OC).

The company previously operated a three-stream panel, covering the UK, Scotland and Ireland.

The previous UK panel included Reed Smith, Pinsent Masons, Addleshaw Goddard, Watson Farley & Williams, Manches and Midlands firm Hill Hofstetter, with Biggart Baillie and Shepherd & Wedderburn handling Scottish issues and Arthur Cox the sole Ireland adviser.

This July, Siemens general counsel Claire Carless told Legal Week she did not expect to completely revamp the panel but that she would be “surprised if there are no changes”.

The technology company said that by streamlining the panel to three firms it hoped to “develop much deeper relationships between the in-house Siemens team and the panel, to engender a better understanding by the panel firms of the Siemens businesses and to create greater efficiencies and value for the UK organisation”.

Carless, who joined the company from Vodafone in March last year, said the three firms “demonstrated exemplary legal capability and a willingness to collaborate and complement our own in-house team”.

Siemens’ UK in-house team consists of more than 80 lawyers and contract managers and a team of six compliance experts, aligned to the company’s four business sectors: energy, healthcare, industry and infrastructure & cities, as well as the cross-sector businesses including Siemens Financial Services.

“Eversheds is at the forefront of working with in-house teams to deliver legal services through innovative, cost efficient and productive solutions,” said a spokesperson from the firm. “We look forward to working collaboratively with Siemens and the other panel firms in order to deliver real value to their business.”

An OC spokesperson said: “Siemens provides solutions across key sectors like energy, industry, infrastructure, healthcare and financial services and our own sector-focused approach is going to allow us to tailor our advice to their specific business objectives.

“The fact that we are able to offer specialist sector knowledge, backed up by a full service legal offering, is a very powerful proposition.”
