Reed Smith seals strategic alliance with Athens law firm

Reed Smith is strengthening its presence in Greece via an alliance with Athens law firm Papapolitis & Papapolitis (P&P).

The non-exclusive alliance, which took effect earlier this month, extends an informal working relationship between the pair which started two years ago.

The US firm decided to formalise the alliance in anticipation of large projects and transactions resulting from the country’s economic crisis and structural reforms in Greece.

Reed Smith is one of only a handful of UK and US law firms with offices in Greece, with its office in Piraeus, which opened in 2007, specialising in shipping, life sciences, commercial disputes and corporate matters.

P&P has 15 lawyers including five partners covering corporate, banking, finance, real estate and capital markets work, thereby adding to Reed Smith’s reach on bigger local deals.

“With this new alliance we have an even stronger platform in the Greek legal market and an ability to deal with even larger and more complex projects serving our clients’ growing needs,” said John Reece (pictured), Reed Smith’s Greek managing partner.

John Papapolitis, the managing partner of P&P, commented: “We have worked closely with Reed Smith on a number of global finance and corporate matters, as our clients increasingly look for legal advice regarding their outbound investments.”

“We are very pleased to now formalise this relationship and look forward to further enhancing our unique offering within the Greek market to both firms’ clients through this alliance.”

Reed Smith said the alliance was not intended to lead to a merger.
