Al Tamimi and CC among winners at first Corporate Counsel Middle East Awards

Middle East leader Al Tamimi & Company was the big winner at the Corporate Counsel Middle East Awards last night (17 May), securing three prizes at the inaugural event in Dubai, which also saw firms including Clifford Chance (CC) honoured alongside in-house teams at companies such as Al Tayer Group.

Al Tamimi saw off competition from four firms including Habib Al Mulla and Hadef & Partners to pick up the prized Middle East Law Firm of the Year award at the event, which was hosted by Legal Week in the Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi hotel.

The UAE firm also won Commercial Team of the Year and Corporate Team of The Year for its work advising Coca-Cola on an acquisition of stakes in Saudi Arabian company Aujan Industries.

CC, meanwhile, which has 35 years’ experience in the region, came out top of a shortlist of six firms including Allen & Overy (A&O), Clyde & Co and DLA Piper to take the coveted International Law Firm of The Year award.

Other winners at the event included A&O, which was named Banking, Finance and Restructuring Team of the Year for its high-profile work on the restructuring of Dubai World; and Hadef, which took the Litigation and Dispute Resolution award.

Al Tayer Group, the Dubai-based conglomerate which franchises luxury brands such as Armani, Bulgari and Gucci as well as brands such as Ford, Ferrari and Gap, won two of the top in-house awards, picking up Legal Department of the Year for its seven-strong team led by Tim Frost, who was named General Counsel of the Year.

Other in-house awards saw digital media company Intigral take the Legal Team of the Year award and FedEx Express’s Hassan Bouadar named In-house Lawyer of the Year.

Meanwhile, media and IP boutique The Rights Lawyers won a special achievement award for their work on acclaimed UAE film City of Life.

Around 300 delegates attended last night’s show, which celebrated in-house legal teams and private law firms working in the Middle East. The awards were decided by a judging panel that included Elias Hayek, chairman of Corporate Counsel Middle East and vice president of legal EAME division for Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, as well as Mona Ashour Madi, general counsel – Arabia Unilever Gulf, and Anneliese Reinhold, general counsel & SVP legal & regulatory affairs at du.
