Seven law firms cited among UK's top 100 gay-friendly employers

Seven law firms have been included in this year’s Workplace Equality Index compiled by gay rights charity Stonewall, with Simmons & Simmons topping the rankings for the second year in a row.

The index, which ranks the top 100 gay-friendly employers in the UK, included Simmons & Simmons in 19th place, down from its 15th-place ranking last year.

Other firms to be featured in the rankings include Baker & McKenzie, Eversheds, Herbert Smith, Hogan Lovells, Irwin Mitchell and Pinsent Masons.

The results mark a significant increase in the number of law firms represented in the rankings in comparison to last year, when just Simmons, Herbert Smith, Pinsents and Eversheds made the cut. In total, 26 law firms submitted entries to Stonewall this year, compared to just 24 last year.

The process sees companies nominate themselves to participate through an online survey giving evidence of their policies. An anonymous staff survey is then carried out, which this year saw 7,000 lesbian, gay and bisexual participants. The top 20 finalists are then separately audited.

Commenting on Hogan Lovells’ inclusion in the rankings, the firm’s co-chair of the diversity committee Ruth Grant (pictured) said: “This is a great result that reflects the progress Hogan Lovells has made in its commitment to encouraging and maintaining a diverse workforce that is both inclusive and welcoming.

“We have exciting plans to develop this commitment further in 2011, including events at our forthcoming diversity awareness month in the spring.”
