CC confirms Charlton as new Asia managing partner

Clifford Chance’s (CC) global head of corporate, Peter Charlton, has been voted in as the firm’s new Asia managing partner.

Charlton (pictured), who takes over in the role after former Asia managing partner Jim Baird had to step down due to illness, will move to the firm’s Singapore office in November.

Charlton said: “Leading CC is Asia is the most exciting challenge in the firm today, and growing our business in the region is critical to the firm’s success.”

CC set up a securities practice in its Singapore office earlier this year with a focus on servicing Indian clients.

Capital markets partner Edward Bradley is set to relocate to Singapore this month to build the firm’s India team, which has already seen its first recruit with capital markets partner Rahul Guptan joining from Indian firm Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co.

The news follows a number of hires for CC’s Asian practice, including the recent addition of asset finance partner Simon Briscoe.

Briscoe joined CC’s Singapore office from city rival Norton Rose in May and will bolster the firm’s aviation asset finance practice.

The voting process for the role of global corporate chief is now set to begin; however, CC told Legal Week that, as yet, no candidates have been put forward for the role.

Charlton, formerly London managing partner, took up the role as global corporate head in 2005, succeeding David Childs, now managing partner of the magic circle firm.
