Corporate Counsel Middle East Awards Law Firm of the Year (Small Practice): KBH Kaanuun

Finalists: Al Jallaf Advocates & Legal Consultants; Al Busaidy Mansoor Jamal & Co; Global Advocacy and Legal Counsel; Hassan Al Khater Law Office; Khoshaim & Associates.

KBH Kaanuun owed its triumph in this category to the “compelling evidence” it provided for each of the entry criteria, the judges said.

They added that the firm had showed “significant contributions in the form of groundbreaking cases, important precedents and innovation in its litigation funding arrangements”.

KBH is a boutique based in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), with additional offices in Kuwait and Bahrain.

The firm has been at the cutting edge of legal developments in the region, particularly in the DIFC where it has worked on a number of cases that set new legal precedents.

Examples of the firm’s innovative approach include its use of litigation funding to fund an entire case in a financial mis-selling matter, conducting proceedings in the UK from the DIFC, and testing what amounts to a ‘reasonable employer’ under DIFC Employment Law.

The firm’s claimant-led litigation practice is characterised by its willingness to adopt creative fee structures, including conditional fee arrangements and the use of litigation funding support.

In the last financial year, KBH has achieved particularly significant litigation victories against a major financial institution and one of the biggest property developers in the UAE.
