Olswang promotes two to partner as Mishcon makes up six

Olswang has made up just two partners in this year’s promotion round with London and Singapore both seeing one of their number made up.

London intellectual property (IP) lawyer Joel Vertes and Singapore-based technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) lawyer Matt Pollins have joined the firm’s partnership.

Last year the firm revealed an all-female set of new partners, promoting five associates across its London and Paris offices.

Olswang chief executive officer Paul Stevens said: “I am delighted to welcome Joel and Matt into the partnership, and I’m particularly pleased that this year’s partner promotions are both lawyers who have trained, grown and excelled here at Olswang.”

Vertes promotion is effective 1 May, while Pollins joined the partnership in February.

This week Olswang also posted its spring trainee retention rate. The firm reported a 50% retention rate.

Out of two trainees qualifying in March it offered one a position as a newly qualified lawyer in its real estate team. The other qualifier opted to accept a position outside the firm.

The firm recently announced plans to move to an open plan office layout in London by March 2017 as part of its strategy to improve flexible working.

In Asia Olswang has made moves to expand its business over the last year, entering into associations in Hong Kong and Singapore. In addition regional managing partner Rob Bratby will be returning to London in May and replaced by Singapore corporate partner Andrew Stott.

Olswang is the latest firm to release its partner promotion figures for 2016. Last week Allen & Overy announced a 21-strong promotion round – including six in the City- while Slaughter and May promoted one woman in a 10-strong round.

Meanwhile, Mishcon de Reya has made up six partners in its latest round of promotions, the latest since the firm moved to an Limited Liability Partnership structure in October last year.

The firm also appointed six legal directors. All of the newly appointed twelve are based in the firm’s London office.

Four female partners were promoted in this year’s round after 2015′s three-strong all-female round.

Last year nine lawyers were promoted to legal director.
