RPC hires ex-T-Mobile GC to expand consultancy arm

UK firm RPC has hired the former general counsel of T-Mobile Julia Chain to broaden the scope of its consultancy business launched earlier this year.

In February, the firm set up RPC Consulting offering actuarial and management consultancy services in the insurance sector.

It now plans to target a wider range of clients by appointing Chain as director of newly created division General Counsel Services. Chain will work with GCs in sectors from financial services through to manufacturing and retail.

Chain has already been working for RPC Consulting since late September but General Counsel Services will not formally launch until the first quarter of 2016.

Chain said the service would provide advice to GCs on areas including the organisation and management of their in house legal department, management of external legal spend, advice on technology, and help with leadership development and coaching.

Chain is also looking to hire more staff for General Counsel Services.

“At the moment the plan is to grow organically and recruit a mix of management consultants and lawyers with some consultancy experience as and when we need them but obviously we are always on the look-out for good people,” she said.

Chain joins RPC on a full time basis and is putting her existing legal management consultancy business JSC Associates, which she set up last year, on hold to focus on the role.

Previously, Chain was a managing director at global consultancy group Huron Legal between November 2009 and June 2014. She joined Huron after working as general counsel of T-Mobile for nearly six years.

Before going in-house in 1998, Chain spent five years as managing partner of Garretts, the UK arm of global accountancy firm Andersen Legal that dissolved in 2002 in the wake of the Enron scandal.
