Overview

Mills & Reeve, which has has offices in Cambridge, Birmingham, London and Norwich, has set its stall out to become the first national private client practice in the UK, and in recent years has made good progress, increasing turnover by almost 10% in 2007-08 to £62.5m. Independent research has shown very high levels of client satisfaction, while the transfer of Addleshaw Goddard's family teams in Leeds and Manchester in February 2008 also gave the firm a major boost.

"A most impressive operation," says one contributor who worked opposite the firm's Cambridge office, praising the "astute" and "constructive" Mills & Reeve team.

History

In 2005 Mills & Reeve moved into new offices in Birmingham, doubling the size of its previous offices, putting it among the main Birmingham players in the heart of the city. The 18 months leading up to the move saw the firm launch a number of new practice areas in the city, including commercial litigation and private client.

In 2007 the firm made the switch to limited liability status, before in September of that year announcing a new five-year business plan to target a handful of industry sectors and consider opening new domestic offices. The firm singled out insurance and reinsurance, healthcare, universities and urban regeneration work as areas for major investment.

Mills & Reeve's efforts were recognised at the 2007 British Legal Awards, when the firm took home the Regional Firm of the Year award.

In 2008 the firm made up seven lawyers to its partnership, taking the total number of partners in the firm to 89.

Culture

The firm's flexible benefits programme, My£Rewards, which brings all the firm's benefits together, has helped generate high levels of job satisfaction while boosting retention rates to an above-average 87%. In addition, March 2008 saw the firm placed 68th in the The Sunday Times' latest 100 Best Companies To Work rankings.

From the perspective of team leader in a transaction where the Cambridge office was on the other side in a hellishly difficult case for all, a most impressive operation. Astute, but thoroughly constructive. "The firm I would use if I was not happy where I am"said our client at one point before laying into the US firm that also were involved!
