Mayer Brown has launched a redundancy consultation which is set to affect up to eight associates in London, while four partners are also departing the firm's City office.
The consultation, which began last week, will affect associates from a variety of practice areas, while the partner departures come in the firm's corporate department.
In a statement, the firm said that it had decided the cuts were necessary after looking carefully at its business to maintain a strong platform.
A Mayer Brown spokesperson said: "We thank them for their contribution over the years and also wish them every success in the future."
The news comes nine months after the firm's City office cut 55 jobs, including 23 fee earners and 32 support staff.
The layoffs affected the firm's transactional practice areas, with corporate and real estate the hardest hit. At the same time, the firm also instituted a pay freeze for London staff and asked trainees to defer their start dates.
Mayer Brown is one of a handful of firms still cutting jobs in the City, with Clifford Chance (CC) last month laying off eight associates from its London capital markets practice.
CC stated that the cuts were not part of a larger programme of redundancies.

When you are in a hole....
Better to make no comment at all than to say "We thank them for their contribution over the years and also wish them every success in the future". Utterly crass.

Mayer/Maher
Was Paul GTM Maher really the only dealmaker they had? Surely there are more Roots and Clay than him?

A New Year’s resolution: stop reflecting on Maher.
Paul Maher has left! Yes Paul was instrumental in driving the firm forward, he was a fantastic asset to the firm and he's proving to be a tremendous success at Greenberg but Mayer Brown must surely have other lawyers capable of filling the void. Do they?

This is another typically well-timed move by the US version of Titanic. I had two cheap bottles of wine for 10 years' service; oh yes, and a redundancy letter, pathetic...
The sooner this failing blob rolls over the better, it's an awful place to work with a lower morale level than a family living in the pants worn by its rather fat yank lawyers.
What a tragic waste of Rowe and Maw, once a respected and great law firm. Oh yes, Paul Maher was the only dealmaker by the way.

Success? As an M&A lawyer you live and die by your deals. It's dead easy to hire people, particularly when lots of them are on the market. Maher ran the Mayer Brown corporate group for a decade and all these partners will have been Maher recruits or promotions. How will it reflect his leadership through that time if he doesn't hire the lot?

Paul Maher
"Paul ... [is] proving to be a tremendous success at Greenberg"
Is there any evidence at all for this comment? I haven't heard of GTM doing anything tremendous since its launch except for hoovering up a curious assortment of not-top-tier partners from not-top-tier firms.

No plan B at MB
It is very sad to see what is happening at Mayer Brown. The loss of Maher was highly damaging from all sorts of perspectives, true, but equally damaging has been the lack of any strategic response to the effects of the financial crisis. The smart money is on a general rush for the exits in early 2010.

It will say absolutely nothing about his leadership.

Think it might not, me thinks his new firm may though.
