Eight promotions come in the firm's London hub across a range of practices, while three in Paris get the nod alongside two in Frankfurt and one apiece in Brussels, Dubai, Madrid and Stockholm.
New finance partner Paul Stewart will initially be based in London before moving to Milan to continue his partnership role.
Six of the 17 promotions are in corporate with three in finance. Almost a third of the new partners are women, meanwhile, with six female associates entering the partnership.
Senior partner Geoffrey Green commented: "The promotions reflect our strategy of investing in key areas and geographies in order to deliver continued growth despite market volatility."
Managing partner Simon Bromwich added: "When we start to think about our new partners it's a case of deciding where the best people are, looking where the business is strong and ensuring that they fit into our strategy. Then hopefully you end up with a very talented group of lawyers, as we have this year."The announcement represents a dip on last year's record total of 20 promotions despite Ashurst last year posting a 36% surge in partner profits to just below the £1m mark. The firm also promoted 13 associates to the new role of counsel in 2007, as well as modifying its lockstep to allow greater rewards for star performers.
The number of promotions matches that unveiled yesterday (31 March) by national heavyweight Pinsent Masons, which also made up 17 new partners. City rival Herbert Smith, meanwhile, last week announced it was promoting a firm-record 18 new partners, while CMS Cameron McKenna bumped up 11.
