Virgin Media has bolstered its in-house legal team with the hire of SJ Berwin partner Charlotte McMillan.

McMillan, who was a partner in SJ Berwin's media group, will take up the post of assistant general counsel at Virgin Media, working directly with general counsel Bryan Hall as part of an in-house team of 65 lawyers.

As part of her role, McMillan (pictured) will help to establish a four-lawyer team to focus on TV content carriage.

While at SJ Berwin, McMillan advised clients in the television industry on broadcasting and digital media regulation, commercial and copyright matters. She was made up to the partnership in 2004.

She was part of a four-partner media team that the firm dissolved at the beginning of the year. The team's head, Tim Johnson, subsequently joined Field Fisher Waterhouse as head of its cross-practice media group.

SJ Berwin said the decision to close the media team was made because film finance, the team's speciality, was no longer a core practice.

SJ Berwin commerce and technology head Jeremy Schrire said: "Charlotte is very good and we wish her all the best."

The news of McMillan's arrival comes almost a year after Virgin Media appointed Scott Dresser as deputy general counsel.

Dresser's work involves corporate strategy, communications, government affairs and competition, with a focus on M&A activity.
