Lovells has promoted 11 lawyers to of counsel in London - matching last year's round of promotions in the City.

Lovells introduced the of counsel role for senior fee earners and professional support lawyers four years ago, with the position serving either as a stepping stone to partnership or an alternative career path, aimed at recognising those who take on extra responsibilities such as practice development and management.

Managing partner David Harris commented: "Even in tough markets it is important to continue to invest in the development of your people. The promotion to of counsel reflects the work, performance and contribution that many of our senior lawyers make to the life of the firm. It provides a career path of its own as well as providing an opportunity to demonstrate the skills we require of partners."

The bulk of this year's promotions come in corporate, with four lawyers making the grade, while finance receives three and commercial and dispute resolution gain two apiece.

The promotions come in the wake of the news last month (9 April) that Lovells had promoted 19 new partners - an increase of one on the 18 the firm made up last year.

The firm's City base received six new partners, with two in dispute resolution, one in corporate, one in capital markets, one in real estate, and one in pensions.
