SJ Berwin has launched an extranet with one of its primary US referral partners in an unusual move for a non-exclusive alliance.

The site, named The Bridge, is only accessible to staff at SJ Berwin and US ally Goodwin Procter. The initiative, overseen on SJ Berwin's side by Goodwin relationship partner Josyane Gold, was rolled out earlier this month.

The site is aimed at boosting efficiency on mutual client work by specifying counterparts in specialty areas at each firm. It will also see the firms share information about news and events of common interest, including conferences that are jointly sponsored.

SJ Berwin last year narrowed the number of US referral arrangements it operates down to three firms. Aside from Boston-based Goodwin, it also works with New York litigation leader Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison and California-based Cooley Godward Kronish.

SJ Berwin denied that the initiative is a sign that it is moving closer to Goodwin than its other US allies, although SJ Berwin managing partner Ralph Cohen (pictured) confirmed that this is the only extranet run with an ally.

He said: "For each of the firms we work with we have a different way of looking after the relationship. This was a step forward to improve connections with Goodwin. The three relationships are going well, and we are not looking at mergers. We are looking to continue to focus on developing our relationship [with Goodwin], along with a couple of others."

Goodwin Procter managing partner Regina Pisa added: "We have had a close working relationship with SJ Berwin that has evolved over many years. This 'best friend' relationship enables us to address our respective clients' needs in cross-border transactions."
