Barlow Lyde & Gilbert has lost heavyweight insurance partner Colin Croly.
Croly, who headed the top 40 firm's reinsurance and -international risk practice until earlier this year, has left Barlows after 29 years as a partner with the firm.
It is unclear what Croly's next move will be, but his experience covers all areas of insurance and reinsurance, including both contentious and non-contentious matters.
Last year he was cited as a contender for the firm's senior partner position, in a contested election process that saw professional liability head Simon Konsta elected into the management post in May last year.
News of Croly's departure comes after Barlows overhauled the structure of its insurance and reinsurance practices earlier this year - merging the two groups together.
The renamed commercial risk and reinsurance team is being led by London insurance partner Jason Bright and has 16 partners across the firm's offices. It will mainly advise on contentious matters.
The firm said the change was necessary because the departments had been seeing an overlap in work.
The move comes as the firm implements a wider strategy intended to build the prominence of its smaller practice areas.
The firm declined to comment on Croly's departure.

Nice of them to tell us about it!

Well, outside the firm, everyone knew about it despite a news blackout from BLG. BLG advertises Croly on their website as "basically Mr Reinsurance" which rings a little hollow now.

Truly the end of an era. How many more heavyweights can they afford to lose?

There are some serious fractures at the firm which will not be papered over in a hurry. I wouldn't be surprised if the clever ones take this opportunity to bail out.

I thought he was on still on sabbatical. Was this done while he was away. Does anybody know?

It wouldn't be the first time the knife has gone into someone on sabbatical.

He was the brightest star in their firmament - what do they think they are doing? It makes no sense.

Roger Doulton off to Clydes.Grey hair not very highly prized, it seems.

Do any of you have the slightest idea of what you are talking about? Knifed whilst on sabbatical? Brightest star? Untenable views. A long time coming - will give the true stars in that department a chance to shine.

As the firm itself has for years promoted Croly as its brightest star it can hardly complain about market reaction now.The departure of so many highly regarded lawyers over the last few years surely speaks for itself.

So, who are the true stars? If they couldn't shine with Croly there they don't really deserve to do they?!
