Clifford Chance (CC) laid off 35 business support staff from its US practice at the end of last year, it has emerged.

The employees were laid off across the firm's New York and Washington DC offices in early December following a staffing review. The firm did not supply an office breakdown, but said that the majority of the cuts would have affected the significantly larger New York office.

The review was launched after the firm decided to lay off 20 associates in its US litigation practice in October, which the firm said changed its requirements support staff.

Following the downsizing of the US practice, the firm has also sub-let 11,000 sq ft in its New York office to Kilpatrick Stockton. The US firm took over the empty floor space on 1 January. However the space was equivalent to only around half a floor in a building in which CC occupies around 13 floors.

In addition to downsizing through layoffs, CC has also lost a number of partners in the US since last summer - most recently US intellectual property head Victor Siber, who joined Baker Hostetler in February. Other significant departures in the last six months included Washington DC head Leiv Blad and former US managing partner John Carroll.

The firm earlier this week announced that it has re-elected Americas managing partner Craig Medwick for a second four-year term in the role.
