Career Clinic: Can I avoid a return to my old work when my partner returns from sabbatical?

"I'm a senior associate at a mid-tier firm, and for the last three months I've been covering for my supervising partner who has been off on sabbatical.

"Since he's been away I've been given much more responsibility and a lot more of the interesting work comes my way. I'm enjoying the job much more and think I've done quite well.

"The problem is, he's due to come back next month and I want to know how I can swing things so that my job doesn't just revert to the way it was before. Now that I've proved myself I'm hoping to be able to push for more responsibility - or am I just going to have to accept that it'll be back to the way things were?"

A similar thing happened to me - when the partner came back it was back to the donkey work for me. Happily, not that long afterwards I managed to leverage the experience I'd gained to land myself a better job elsewhere. Happy days.

There can be only one!

Watched Highlander last night - great film and full of great quotes. Check it out!

Sorry, the question. As you may have guessed from the above, there can be only one - god I love that film! - you are the whipping boy here sadly, so accept it or move on and bank that experience.

Expect the Worst

Same thing happened to me. My boss came back and was pretty annoyed to find he wasn't indispensable, which is why he could go off for a long holiday in the first place. Within a year I was off. Took clients with me and got a pay rise, so dont despair.

The experience you are getting now is an investment in the job you will be getting next. If your current firm only has an interest in giving you decent work to cover while a partner is away, jumping ship when a decent opportunity comes up should be the focus.
