Paul Stothard is chief executive of national firm Shoosmiths and wants you to leave your comfort zone.
Were you always destined for management or was it thrust upon you?
I suspect I was always destined to be a manager, not necessarily of a law firm.
How would you define your management philosophy (in 20 words or less)?
Trust people for themselves and their ability to achieve anything, given the right conditions and support.
What is the most difficult aspect of your job? And the most rewarding?
The most difficult is dealing with people who are wedded to the past. The most rewarding is seeing brilliant people surprise themselves at what they can achieve.
What is the most pointless piece of management jargon you have ever heard?
'Rank and yank' [also known as the 'vitality curve' concept beloved of former General Electric chief executive Jack Welch, whereby 10% of a workforce is fired at every performance evaluation].
How do you sell your firm to potential recruits?
If you want to be taken outside your comfort zone and be given a chance to realise your true potential, join Shoosmiths.
What has been your most embarrassing/cringe-worthy management moment?
Presenting to a bunch of managers with my flies undone.
Who is your management guru or idol?
Tom Peters. Not because I agree with all that he says we should do, but he challenges established thinking.
Which is more effective in your experience - carrot or stick?
Carrot, every time.
What is the biggest challenge facing your firm over the next 12 months?
Talent retention.
What achievement are you most proud of as a law firm leader?
Instilling a sense of values and brand in the organisation.
How will you know when it is time to call it a day?
When I can no longer make a difference.
