Gary Senior is managing partner of the London office of Baker & McKenzie. His top tips for management success include wearing a suit jacket that matches your trousers.

Were you always destined for management or was it thrust upon you?

I don't believe in destiny.

How would you define your management philosophy (in 20 words or less)?

Focus, implement well and look for feedback to improve.

How does management compare to fee earning?

Managment is more stress during the day but I don't do all-nighters any more.

What is the most difficult aspect of your job? And the most rewarding?

Most difficult is the period up to financial year-end. The most rewarding is when our firm is recognised as the great place to work that it truly is.

What is the most pointless piece of management jargon you have ever heard?

'Learning points'.

How do you get to know junior lawyers/trainees in a firm with so many fee earners?

I have induction sessions with all new trainees and again when they qualify.  I have regular meetings with different associate groups and I also try to make our monthly all staff drinks.

How do you sell your firm to potential recruits?

Great clients; challenging and interesting international work, where individuals can genuinely make their mark.

What has been your most embarrassing/cringe-worthy management moment?

A partner pointing out to me in a meeting that my suit jacket and trousers did not  match.

Who is your management guru or idol?

Don Revie (legendary Leeds United manager in case you didn't know).

Which is more effective in your experience - carrot or stick?

It all depends on who…..and what!

What achievement are you most proud of as a law firm leader?

Our people awards, notably 'Best Trainer - Large City Firm' in the LCN/TSG Training & Recruitment Awards between 2004-07 and being the only non-UK law firm featured in The Times'  Top 100 graduate employers, again from 2004-07.

What is the biggest challenge facing your firm over the next 12 months?

Clients, people and profitability.

How will you know when it is time to call it a day?

When people start offering me a seat on the Tube.

The historical figure I most relate to is…

[Leeds United hardman and Revie enforcer] Billy Bremner.
