White & Case has boosted its Hong Kong arm with the hire of a four-lawyer finance team, including partner John Hartley, from City giant Lovells.

Hartley joined the US firm’s banking, finance and restructuring practice in Hong Kong earlier this month (7 April) along with three associates. He is dual-qualified in Hong Kong and the UK and has represented banks on a range of cross-border finance deals in the China region.

Recent transactions for Hartley include advising Japanese technology and investment company SoftBank on its acquisition of Vodafone’s local mobile phone unit, Vodafone KK – thought to be the largest leveraged buy-out in Asia to date.

Hartley will be joined by banking partner Guan Feng Chen, who is currently based at White & Case’s Singapore office and is relocating to Hong Kong to develop the firm’s links with financial institution clients in the region.

White & Case Hong Kong executive partner Barrye Wall commented: “The significant expansion builds on our solid foundation in the region and demonstrates the continuing commitment of the firm to building its English-law finance practice around the network.

“They will be joined over the summer by further resources from our London and New York offices.”

The news comes after White & Case last month hired Lovells’ international arbitration head, Phillip Capper, in London.

Other senior departures for Lovells in recent weeks include the exits of restructuring partner Matthew French, who took up an in-house role with banking giant UBS, and Italian private equity chief Andrea Accornero, who switched to rival City firm Simmons & Simmons.
