Anthony Ward (pictured) is stepping up to become managing partner of Shearman & Sterling in London, the US firm announced today (1 April).

Ward, who is currently head of Shearman’s City finance team, will succeed high-profile incumbent Kenneth MacRitchie in the management role. MacRitchie returns to full-time fee earning in the project development and finance group after six years at the helm of the London office.

Ward, who joined Shearman as a partner from UK giant Ashurst in 1998, is among the best-known acquisition finance lawyers in the City and has advised major clients including Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley and Barclays Capital.

Earlier this year Legal Week reported that he would be splitting his time between London and Frankfurt after two German banking partners quit Shearman for rival US firms.

Commenting on his appointment, Ward said: “We are coming off a solid year and are very well positioned to continue our growth and our service to clients. I am very appreciative of all that Kenneth has done to get us here over the past six years and I know I will rely on him for his good counsel.”

Shearman structured finance partner Julian Tucker added: “Anthony has been around the office almost as long as Kenneth and has got the same sort of gravitas.”

Shearman’s London office has 27 partners and around 150 lawyers. Revenue at the office grew by around 15% in 2007 to a new high of $132.6m (£66.9m).
