Weil Gotshal & Manges has continued its emerging markets push after confirming that it has received a license to practise in
Beijing.
Steve Xiang – who heads up the New York law firm’s China practice and is currently based in Shanghai – will lead the new office, which will focus initially on M&A and private equity work.
Xiang will be joined by newly-promoted corporate partner Kevin Ban as well as of counsel Yan Yang and a team of associates.
Commenting on the launch, Weil Gotshal chairman Stephen Dannhauser said: “This is a natural step forward for our law firm. Beijing is a market we've long contemplated as a necessary complement to Hong Kong and Shanghai and, as with all of our new office openings, we decided to act based on our ability to deliver to clients the same level of skill and service they have come to expect throughout our firm."
The Beijing office will become the 20th in Weil Gotshal’s global network.
The news comes after the Manhattan firm recently announced plans to enter the Middle East market by opening an office in Dubai. European coordinating partner Joe Tortorici will relocate from the firm’s Prague office to oversee the Dubai debut, which is scheduled to take place by the end of the year.
