Weil Gotshal & Manges has hired Bear Stearns’ chief operating officer of legal and compliance as its new executive director.

David Strumeyer took up his new position on Monday (3 March) and will be based in Weil Gotshal’s New York headquarters. He will be responsible for the administration of the firm’s overall operations.

Before heading up Bear Stearns’ 500-strong legal and compliance department, he was executive director and chief administrative officer of rival Manhattan law firm Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft.

Strumeyer takes over as Weil Gotshal's executive director from Brad Scott, who left the firm towards the end of last year to join West Coast leader Heller Ehrman.

Commenting on the appointment, Weil Gotshal chairman Stephen Dannhauser said: “[Strumeyer’s] strong operational and financial experience and exceptional management and communication skills will serve him well in his new position and complement the firm’s collaborative, interdisciplinary approach very well.”

The news comes after Weil Gotshal last month unveiled its latest financial results, with the New York law firm posting an 11% rise in partner profits to a new mark of $2.11m (£1.06m). Firmwide turnover, meanwhile, improved by 12% compared to 2006, reaching $1.175bn (£591m).

Recent moves by the 300-partner firm include opening an office in Hong Kong last autumn after transferring a five-lawyer team from its Manhattan and Shanghai offices.
