Sidley Austin has bagged a new City partner for its financial services team with the addition of Bruce Gardner from SJ Berwin.

Gardner, who specialises in hedge funds and financial markets, left SJ Berwin today (4 April) and will join the top 10 US firm’s London office next week. He takes with him one associate.

The hire comes after Sidley in February brought in tax partner David Hinds from rival US firm Covington & Burling. Hinds, who specialises in fund formation work, is a former SJ Berwin partner.

Tom Cole, chairman of Sidley’s executive committee, said of the hire: “Bruce significantly deepens the pool of talent we have in our internationally recognised hedge fund practice, which is already a market leader in both the US and Asia.”

The news leaves Victoria Younghusband – who joined from LG last year – as the sole partner in SJ Berwin’s respected hedge fund practice. The financial services group as a whole now comprises five partners and 19 other lawyers.

Private equity funds partners Mark Mifsud, Richard Watkins and Justin Dolling all left SJ Berwin for Kirkland & Ellis at the beginning of last year.

SJ Berwin financial services head David Calligan commented: “It has always been the plan to expand in that area and expand on the hedge funds and funds formation practice. Younghusband is part of that drive.”

Gardner was a partner at SJ Berwin in the 1980s before moving to Hammonds in 1996. He returned to his former firm as a partner in 2001.
