Austin has bagged a new tax partner in
London, taking on David Hinds from the City arm of rival
US firm Covington & Burling.
Hinds, who was also a partner at Covington, will focus on fund formation work and fund-related transactions. Prior to joining Covington in 2002, Hinds was a partner at SJ Berwin. He is chairman of the UK branch of the International Fiscal Association.
Commenting on the appointment, Sidley London chief Drew Scott, who also heads the firm’s local tax group, said: “Tax is critical to every aspect of our transactional practice here in London, which increasingly includes funds-related work, encompassing both hedge funds and private equity.”
The news comes in the wake of a number of partner-level departures from Sidley’s London arm. Veteran corporate partner Robert Asher joined the UK office of San Francisco-based firm Heller Ehrman, while finance partner Steve Clark switched to City firm Olswang at the end of last year.
Hinds moves with Washington DC firm Covington looking to boost its City presence, having last year moved to hire former Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer duo Roger Enock and Martin Wright. However; Wright – who was to head up the firm’s European corporate practice – subsequently opted not to join the firm, citing personal reasons for his decision.
Sidley’s global tax group numbers more than 50 lawyers, including 27 partners, and counts Washington Mutual Bank, General Electric and Citadel Investment Group among its existing clients.
