Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom has boosted its US healthcare practice with the hire of a senior partner from domestic rival Jones Day.

Greg Luce, who co-chaired the healthcare team at Jones Day, joins Skadden in Washington DC, where he will lead the firm’s healthcare enforcement and litigation group.

Luce’s practice focuses on civil and criminal litigation and regulatory matters involving the healthcare industry. He is also a former Assistant Attorney General in Virginia.

Skadden’s healthcare group advises a range of healthcare providers, life sciences and pharmaceutical companies on areas including M&A, tax, antitrust and intellectual property.

Commenting on the appointment, Skadden executive partner Robert Sheehan said: “Luce is widely recognised as one of the country’s foremost healthcare lawyers. We believe Greg’s addition to our outstanding government enforcement and class action litigation team enhances our capabilities to provide superb legal services to our healthcare clients.”

News of the hire comes after Skadden once again topped The American Lawyer’s annual survey of the US’ largest law firms, published this week, with the Manhattan powerhouse raking in fees totaling $2.17bn (£1.09bn) in 2007. Jones Day placed fourth, with income of $1.44bn (£720m).

Last month Skadden firm made up a total of 25 new partners in its 2008 round of internal promotions, including three based at its City arm.
