Lovells has moved to boost its UK intellectual property (IP) practice with the hire of a partner from Birmingham giant Wragge & Co.

Adam Cooke, who has been a partner at Wragges since 2000, is expected to join Lovells in London later this year, bringing with him 20 years of experience in patent law. Cooke, who focuses on the life sciences sector, has previously advised clients including biotechnology giant Genetech.

Lovells last year started up patent litigation practices in Japan and the US, having hired New York-based partner Veronica Mullally from West Coast giant Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe in July.

Cooke’s move represents Lovells’ fifth partner-level appointment in IP over the last 12 months and brings the number of partners in the global team to 49.

Other additions include US-based IP partner David Leichtman and Warsaw patent litigation partner Krystyna Szczepanowska-Kozlowska.

Lovells managing partner David Harris commented: “Patent litigation is a highly specialised area and the UK is a major jurisdiction for this type of work. Adam's addition to the team is an important step in reinforcing our position as a leading IP practice.”

The news comes after Lovells last week lost restructuring partner Matthew French to an in-house role at Swiss baking giant UBS, while international arbitration chief Phillip Capper quit the City giant to join the UK arm of White & Case.
