Watson Farley & Williams is promoting nine associates to its partnership, the City firm announced yesterday (28 April) – marking a major increase on last year, when just one new partner was made up.

Five of this year’s promotions come at the firm’s City headquarters: Chris Kilburn, Philip Mace and Mark Tooke (all corporate); Patrick Kirkby (shipping finance); and Sandra Sinclair-Hughes (project and structured finance).

The firm also made up one new partner apiece at each of its Bangkok, Paris, Rome and Singapore offices.

A total of five new partners were made up in corporate, with other promotions coming in litigation and tax. The appointments are effective from 1 May and bring the firm’s total partnership to 78.

Commenting on the news, managing partner Michael Greville (pictured) said: “These promotions reflect the recent growth of the firm and recognise the contributions made by these associates to the successful development of our practice across our several offices.”

The news comes after a mixed year for the top 50 UK outfit, which saw a merger bid with US firm Chadbourne & Park fail in November after almost a year of discussions. During that time the firm also sustained a run of senior departures, including international litigation chief David Kavanagh.

Last year the firm propped up the Legal Week Top 50, charting total revenues of £54m and average partner profits of £396,000.
