Barlow Lyde & Gilbert has appointed Peter Flint as a partner to head up its international arbitration practice.
Flint joins on 14 January from rival City firm Watson Farley & Williams, where he had been a partner in the international litigation group since 2004. Prior to that he had headed up Watson Farley’s Singapore office as local managing partner.
Flint has a wide ranging experience of international commercial dispute resolution, in particular arbitration in the energy, oil and gas, trade and finance sectors.
He recently defended the Indian Government against a $6bn (£3.04bn) claim brought by General Electric and construction group Bechtel regarding the Dabhol power project in Maharashtra.
News of the latest appointment comes after Barlows last month hired two rated professional liability partners, Tony Nurse-Marsh and Clive Brett, from Oxford firm Henmans.
Commenting on his move, Flint said: “Barlows is renowned for its excellence in dispute resolution [and] boasts a strong institutional client base, providing me with an excellent platform to develop my practice, particularly in cross-border arbitration.”
The loss of Flint follows the collapse late last year of merger talks between Watson Farley and New York-based suitor Chadbourne & Parke, which would have created a transatlantic legal practice with combined annual revenues of £200m.
