Nabarro has moved to strengthen its position in the mid-tier corporate market with the hire of highly-regarded corporate lawyer Alasdair Steele from Travers Smith.

Smith joined Travers in 1996 and made partner in 2005. Between 2000 and 2003 he was a director in the corporate finance team at ntl.

His practice focuses on UK and cross-border corporate finance including public and private M&A.

Nabarro corporate head Iain Newman told Legal Week: “Alasdair is an excellent lawyer and will be an excellent addition to the corporate department. The firm is committed to expanding the practice and we will continue to look for the right opportunities.”

The latest hire comes off the back of the arrival of Martin Finnegan, head of capital markets at McGrigors, to Nabarro’s corporate team.

Last year the firm made the high-profile hire of Patrick Speller from Allen & Overy. Speller landed the firm a role on a Heineken joint venture in South Africa after he brought the drinks giant to the firm as a new client

Nabarro has seen a good deal of recruitment activity over the last few months, hiring environment partner Clare Deanesly from Jones Day, and pensions lawyer Anne-Marie Winton from Pinsent Masons.

Julie Quinn joined the firm’s London employment team from A&O, while in Sheffield the construction group received a boost with the hire of James Duckworth from Hull law firm Andrew Jackson.

With the latest hires, the number of partners across both London and Sheffield sits at 131, with around 85 holding full equity status.
