Travers Smith has named Phil Sanderson (pictured) as its new head of private equity, with Sanderson set to replace Charles Barter at the helm of the key practice group.

Sanderson, who has been a partner at Travers since 2001, will take over from Barter as head of the group on 1 July.

Sanderson has been involved in a number of Travers’ largest private equity deals in recent times, including 3i’s sale last year of car parking group NCP for £790m to Macquarie. Prior to becoming a partner he spent a year on secondment at Willkie Farr & Gallagher in New York.

Barter co-founded Traver’s private equity group in 1996 and is the relationship partner for a number of major clients, including mid-market buy-out house Bridgepoint Capital. He will continue to do fee earning work at the firm and is also to take on a wider management and marketing role.

Barter commented: “I have thoroughly enjoyed the last five years heading up the group but am now keen to pass on the challenge to Phil.”

Travers’ nine-partner private equity team is one of the most active groups of the firm, advising on £20bn worth of deals in the last 12 months. It is regarded as having consistently punched above its weight over the last few years, boasting a client roster that also includes Exponent Private Equity, Phoenix Equity Partners, Macquarie and Barclays Private Equity.
