National trio Halliwells, Beachcroft and Pinsent Masons are among the firms to have scored spots on the new panel of legal advisers drawn up by Manchester United.

The panel is the first of its kind at the football club, with the appointments taking effect from 1 May.

Halliwells – which in 2006 merged with former Manchester United adviser James Chapman & Co – will take the lead on any IT matters and some areas of commercial work while Pinsents will advise on data protection.

Beachcroft will handle employment and licensing, while media law specialist Wiggin will advise the club’s television channel, MUTV. Both firms have previously acted for the club in the past.

Northwest firm Brabners Chaffe Street, a regular adviser to the Premier League club, has also been selected for the roster, netting primary responsibility for dispute resolution, real estate and some aspects of commercial.

Although not formally selected on the panel, magic circle firm Allen & Overy will continue to act as the club’s main corporate adviser. The City giant acted for the US-based Glazer family on their controversial takeover of the club in 2004.

Commenting on the appointments, Manchester United head of legal Patrick Stewart said: “The panel provides Manchester United with ready access to a pool of law firms [that] can provide top-level specialist advice to complement the skills and capabilities of the in-house team.

“Bringing these firms under a panel umbrella will help ensure a consistency of approach and management efficiencies.”
