HBJ Gateley Wareing has hired the head of commercial at national giant Pinsent Masons, Simon Pigden, to lead its own commercial department, it was announced today (19 March).

Pigden, who was based at Pinsents’ Birmingham office, joins HBJ Gateley as a partner and will oversee the Anglo-Scots firm’s national commercial practice. His practice focuses on supply chain management, outsourcing, logistics and distribution agreements.

Commenting on the move, Pigden said: “[HBJ Gateley] firm has a vibrant national commercial team with the vision to embrace new ideas and the commitment to rapidly expand its commercial offering across the UK and internationally.”

HBJ Gateley senior partner Michael Ward added: “Our commercial team is fast becoming one of the powerhouses of the firm and we are delighted to welcome a lawyer of Simon’s calibre and reputation to the firm.”

HBJ Gateley is a top 70 UK firm, with 80 partners spread across half a dozen offices in the UK and an outpost in Dubai, where the firm launched last year. The expansive national also secured its City debut last year, having brokered a merger deal with specialist shipping outfit Shaw and Croft.
