National law firm Mills & Reeve has boosted its healthcare and corporate practices with two new appointments for the new year.

Bridget Archibald has been promoted to head of the healthcare practice and Wragge & Co director Julian Smith has been hired as a corporate partner in its Birmingham office. East Anglia-based Archibald replaces David Lock as head of healthcare. The highly-rated Lock will continue to act as a consultant to the firm. The firm has one of the UK’s largest healthcare practices with numerous links with the NHS.

Archibald will be responsible for a department that has more than 100 clients. Her expertise in project funding across the health and education sectors has seen her close a number of NHS LIFT projects worth more than £150m, as well as advising on a private finance initiative worth £22m.

The firm’s Birmingham office hopes the hire of Smith will help build its corporate team. Smith was one of the first lawyers at Wragges to make director and recently lead a team for an acquisition of a UK healthcare firm for about £90m.

The appointments come after DLA Piper partner Alex Jones was recently hired to boost the firm’s Midlands real estate arm.
