Bond Pearce is to launch in Aberdeen after recruiting a seven-lawyer team from McGrigors, Legal Week can reveal, as the southwest firm looks to cash in on the buoyant energy sector.

The new Scots arm, which marks the law firm’s first major foothold north of the border, will be headed by energy specialist and former BP in-house lawyer Clare Munro. Two of the team were partners at McGrigors.

Bond Pearce will now hire support staff to man the new office, which hands the firm a presence in one of Europe’s key oil and gas markets. In addition, McGrigors London energy lawyers Paul McGoldrick and Jane Chester join Bond Pearce in the capital, along with consultant Sandy Shaw and associate John McSparran. Five of the seven join Bond Pearce as partners.

All seven had joined McGrigors last year as part of its ambitious hire of a 12-partner team from Ledingham Chalmers. Energy partner Bob Ruddiman, who led the Ledingham team, is among those to stay on at McGrigors.

The news is a coup for Bond Pearce, which has aggressively targeted the energy sector in recent years. Managing partner Victor Tettmar told Legal Week: “We have been developing a strong energy practice for quite some time now, so this was a unique opportunity.”

A spokesperson for McGrigors said: “McGrigors’ energy team has gone from strength to strength as a full-service project-based practice working across oil and gas, power and project finance. The 40-strong practice will continue to grow and continue to be a key sectoral focus for the firm. We wish the departing team members well for the future."
