Macfarlanes has made up five lawyers to its partnership in this year’s round of promotions, with the City firm’s corporate practice surprisingly missing out.

Debt finance is the main beneficiary of the promotions, receiving two new partners from 1 May. The corporate tax, property and contentious construction and engineering practices, meanwhile, each gain one new partner apiece.

The promotions represent a slight increase on last year's total, when the firm made up just four new partners. Macfarlanes promoted six lawyers to its partnership in 2006.

Commenting on the news, senior partner Robert Sutton said: “To promote five excellent partners in key areas of the practice is a tangible sign of our confidence in the strength of our practice. We see a growing demand for specialist, high-quality, independent advisers across many of the markets on which we concentrate.”

The news comes with the top 30 UK law firm gearing up for life under a new management team, with private equity partner Charles Martin set to take over from Sutton as senior partner and corporate chief Simon Martin poised to replace Paul Phippen as managing partner. Both Sutton and Phippen have served three consecutive three-year terms in their respective roles.

Macfarlanes joins City firms including CMS Cameron McKenna, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Olswang among the first major City practices to announces its internal promotions.
