Jones Day has coaxed Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft London corporate partner Peter Baldwin over to its City operation.

Baldwin, who joined Cadwalader as a partner in the US firm’s London office in 2005, has acted for big-name clients including Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse, Lehman Brothers and Blue Bay Asset Management.

Before joining Cadwalader, Baldwin spent 11 years at magic circle firm Slaughter and May, acting on a range of public and private corporate deals and equity capital markets transactions including Aviva’s acquisition of RAC, Prudential’s £1bn rights issue and disposals

The appointment comes in the same month as Jones Day promoted four new partners in London out of 46 globally. Andrew Barker (banking and finance), Rosalind Connor (employee benefits), Tim Flood (government regulation) and Vica Irani (capital markets) were all made up on 1 January.

Jones Day London head Russell Carmedy said “These appointments are part of Jones Day’s continuing strategy of growth by internal promotion and selective lateral hires. Jones Day London appointed a total of eight partners in 2007.”

In November, Jones Day hired Andrew Chen, a director and head of the debt capital markets legal team at Japanese bank Nomura, and in August the firm hired Mayer Brown London finance partner Michael Pabst.
