Ince & Co has appointed a new senior partner, with James Wilson set to take the helm of the specialist shipping firm after clinching the post in a contested election.

Wilson, who currently heads the firm’s marine casualty practice, was confirmed in the management role for a five-year term last week (16 November). He will replace outgoing incumbent Peter Rogan when he steps down from the position in spring 2008 and will work alongside current managing partner Chris Jefferis.

Rogan, a reinsurance specialist who became senior partner in 2000, is to take a sabbatical before returning to the top 50 UK firm, where he will spearhead efforts to develop the insurance business group.

Under Rogan’s leadership the firm has expanded significantly with new offices launched in Shanghai, Hamburg, Paris, Le Havre and Dubai. During his tenure the firm has almost doubled its global revenues, with turnover reaching a new high of £56m for 2006-07.

Wilson joined the firm as a trainee in 1983 and became head of the marine casualty practice in 1997. He is an accredited mediator who has helped develop the Maritime Solicitors Mediation Service, an initiative by maritime law firms in the UK promoting greater use of mediation in the sector.

Wilson said the firm was now ready to "springboard forward over the next three to five years" in both contentious and non-contentious practice areas.

He commented: “I feel very honoured to have been asked to take on the role of senior partner when Peter steps down next year. He will be a hard act to follow and I am delighted that he will be staying on to develop and expand our insurance and reinsurance business.”

Earlier this year (March) the firm promoted seven lawyers to its partnership, taking the total number of partners at the firm to 78.
